Celtics Hall of Famer Paul Pierce sees greatness in Jayson Tatum in their shared workouts

Iron sharpens iron, or so goes the old adage rightly favored by NBA players for its simple if profound message. To wit, Jayson Tatum‘s offseason preparations for a crucial season with the Boston Celtics have taken center stage in the St. Louis native’s Instagram, Tatum recently posted a clip of himself working out with Hall of Fame Celtics small forward Paul Pierce.

Pierce, a vocal supporter of Tatum throughout his career, praised the young player’s growth and maturity on the court, talking about “watching JT sharpen those tools, seeing what greatness looks like” in their shared workouts (h/t MassLive’s Brian Robb).

“I’m seeing his game mature right before our eyes,” said Pierce in an earlier interview with CLNS Media.

“He’s a lot stronger. He’s playing with a lot more confidence. The way he’s passing the ball. He’s doing a better job getting to the free throw line.”

Now, the question is whether he is strong enough, confident enough, mature enough to win it all and put his mark on the game as one of its all-time greats — and taking notes from another is no bad way to get over that hump.
