Celtic should thank Rangers for helping serial European losers into Champions League promised land – Hotline

The Rangers clearout took centre stage on the Hotline but, fear not, there was still room for a bit of traditional back-biting between the Old Firm fans with today's battleground being Europe.

First, though, the decision from Ibrox to cut ties with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Filip Helander. Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, emailed: "All this tosh about lost millions re the sales of Kent and Morelos. The bottom line is this – Gerrard wouldn't allow their sale, and eventually, both players simply sat tight and ran down their contracts, which was their right. Get over it."

Alan McGaw, Alloa, emailed: "Just heard who’s leaving Ibrox at the end of season. Yes, I expected Kent, Morelos and McGregor but was disappointed to see Scott Arfield was let go. He should have been included for another year as he could still do the business, even as a sub. He played for the badge and jersey. I hope the club doesn't regret it."

Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: "Neil Murray said Rangers only need three new players. Rangers fans won't accept this. It's clear that there is a lack of squad depth that are quality. No trophy next season and Beale will be gone."

Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: "Michael Beale says he is starting a clear out? Well he should start on the terracings and clear out the sectarian and anti Irish bile that has poisoned the club since 1872 and move into the present day 21st century like the rest of the civilised society."

On to Europe, and George Wilson, West Sussex, had this to say: "As expected, the same anti Rangers regulars are on here again criticising myself as well as Rangers but offering no defence on my comments that Celtic have been an embarrassment in Europe for 20 years. A vastly weakened Rangers defence did indeed inherit the worst record this season, but that was one season not 20. Pleased to hear that Bud Hay is in better health now as for once he hasn’t choked on his cornflakes."

Rob McNab, Dunoon, emailed: "The rest of Scottish football should be thanking just one club - Glasgow Rangers - for single-handedly rising Scotland’s coefficient. Celtic are serial losers in Europe. They have to go back to the 60s for a wee success whilst Rangers have had numerous successful seasons in Europe including reaching two finals in a little over 10 years… that’s called European pedigree.

"I can’t understand why other clubs aren’t showing any gratitude for all the financial rewards and guaranteed European football they are getting because of Rangers. Let’s be honest, Celtic would struggle to win a qualifier so again Rangers have given them a helping hand."

But Kenny Wilson, Moffat, emailed: "I agree most teams would want to draw Celtic in the Champions League. Why wouldn't they?

"We have a 60,000 stadium with one of the best atmosphere’s in Europe (as quoted by the world's best players ) and will take a huge following to the away fixtures. And yes we’re not anywhere near the best but as the facts say we’re not the worst team in Champions League history! Can’t remember who that is."

Alan Flett emailed: "Rangers haven’t given me much to smile about recently, but at least you can always rely on Celtic for entertainment. Firstly, we had wee Callum McGregor claiming that they would reach a Euro final. Then, John Kennedy compares them to Man. City and last but not least, we get Neil Lennon’s hilarious comments about wee McGregor. Pure comedy gold! Keep it up lads!"

Finally, Chris Lowe, Yoker, said: "After a two handed push on him at the weekend Sutton writes that Cantwell goes down too easily and refs will catch onto it. Really Chris ? I must have missed his articles on Jota and Koyogo who have been playing like this for over a year now. Sutton and the Celtic minded fear Cantwell as he’s a good player."
