Camp cooker placed on stovetop explodes when electricity restored after blackout in Devonport

Fire authorities warned the public to be "vigilant around gas cooking, both inside and outside to home".  (Supplied)

Residents of a house in Tasmania's north have had a lucky escape when a camp cooker placed on a stovetop during a power outage blew up when the electricity was restored.

Tasmania Fire Service said emergency crews were called to a "reported explosion" in a home in Devonport, at 2:30pm.

In a statement, the TFS said the "explosion was caused by a gas camping cooker sitting on a cooktop, which heated and exploded".

The occupants were unharmed by the explosion, which caused "extensive damage to the residence, including windows, window frames and roofing tiles".

TFS said they have deemed the incident to be "accidental", warning the public to be "vigilant around gas cooking, both inside and outside to home".
