Cameron Diaz ‘un-retires’ from acting for new Netflix film with Jamie Foxx

Cameron Diaz has announced her ‘un-retirement’ from acting after an eight-year hiatus in a tweet sent by her new co-star Jamie Foxx. Foxx uploaded a phone conversation with Diaz in which he looped in NFL star Tom Brady to give the 49-year-old some tips on how to un-retire, which Brady said he had been “relatively successful” in doing.

Diaz’ last major acting role came in the 2014 film Annie, in which she played Miss Hannigan, but is set to star in the new Netflix film Back in Action alongside Foxx, with the pair having previously worked together in both Annie and 1999’s Any Given Sunday. Diaz said she was “anxious” but also “excited” about the announcement with the actor previously saying she had officially retired from acting in 2018.

Back in Action has been described as an action comedy, with Foxx revealing production on the film is set to begin later this year. The film will be directed by Horrible Boss’ Seth Gordon, and would appear to be a play by the streaming giant to try and retract subscribers back after they’ve lost a considerable amount of customers in the first half of this year.

It will be Diaz’ first foray into the world of streaming first filmmaking, with a lot of the actor’s biggest hits having come in the late 90s and early noughties. Thankfully NFL quarterback Tom Brady knows all about what it’s like to make a comeback, and assured Foxx that he would talk Diaz through the whole process.

Understandably, there was a lot of people on Twitter that were very happy with the news of Diaz’ return, with the actor being associated with such hits as There’s Something About Mary, Shrek and Charlie’s Angels. @tweetsbybob_ said: “Cameron Diaz coming out of retirement means we’re one step closer to Charlie’s Angels 3.”

@VERONASFILMS shared the sentiment, saying: “cameron diaz is such a legend! I'm so glad she’s coming out of retirement. she’s a comedy queen.”

And @chuuzus wrote: “Julia Roberts is back to making romcom, Beyoncé is back with dance bops, vampire horror movies are back, Cameron Diaz is out of retirement. the world is healing.”
