What is open on Queen's funeral bank holiday? Full list from shops to pubs

As the Queen's funeral is set to get underway on Monday, a raft of businesses have closed their doors as a mark of respect on the bank holiday.

The nation will halt and pay respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II tomorrow from 11am as millions of staff and workers will get the day off to pay tribute to our longest-serving monarch.

While some shops will be closed on Monday, September 19, other businesses have confirmed they'll stay open on the bank holiday.

The government has confirmed there is "no obligation to suspend business" on the day, so the decision to close is up to each firm. Some shops have decided to shutter all locations while other retailers will be open on a limited scale.

Although supermarkets including Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury's will be shuttering on the day, smaller Tesco and Sainsbury's shops will be open.

Here is the list of places that will be open on Monday across the UK...

Supermarkets

While most supermarkets, including Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl, have confirmed their plans to close for the day, there will be some exceptions.

Tesco Express stores will be open in the evenings from 5pm, and a small number of Express stores in Central London and Windsor will remain open throughout the day to help those attending the funeral get what they need.

Tesco UK's Chief Executive Jason Tarry that all of Tesco's large stores will be closed for the day, adding: "We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service."

A "very limited number" of Waitrose stores may also open on the route of the funeral procession in Central London to serve attending members of the public - but these stores will close for the funeral itself.

And while Marks & Spencer is set to close all of its stores and put its delivery services on hold, some stores in the capital will stay open for mourners to grab essentials if needed.

Asda shops will be closed until 5pm to allow workers to watch the funeral. The chain will also pause online deliveries on the 19th.

All Morrisons supermarkets are shutting, but their petrol forecourts will open at 5pm.

Co-op stores will only stay closed until 5pm, with the exception of some stores in central London and towards Windsor. These stores will remain open during the day to serve crowds attending the funeral.

Co-ops online orders and delivery services will also resume at 5pm.

Pubs

Dedicated punters will be pleased to hear that pubs are likely to stay open on the day of the Queen's funeral.

While it's true hospitality industry tends to stay open on bank holidays, the hours of local or independent pubs should be checked in advance.

Wetherspoons has confirmed will be open on the 19th, but most pubs will open later than usual at 1pm. The chain has gone a step further and announced discount prices on Thursday, September 15.

A spokesman for the company said: "Pub company Wetherspoon is opening its pubs in central London, rail stations and airports and all of its hotels (hotels will be open for resident guests only) during normal trading hours from 8am until midnight on Monday September 19.

"The majority of its pubs will open later than usual, after the state funeral, at approximately 1pm and will remain open during normal trading hours after that."

Fullers Group - which has 400 pubs across the country - have announced that it expects all of its pubs to remain open on Monday.

A spokesperson for Fullers said: "We anticipate that Fullers pubs will be opening on the day of the funeral to provide a place for people to come together and pay their respects."

Shopping centres and retailers

Retailers across the country are set to close their stores next Monday as a mark of respect for the Queen, however some shopping centres will stay open.

St James' Quarter in Edinburgh will be "predominantly closed" with only a small number of food and beverage related outlets opening later in the day. The shopping centre has also postponed two events, Edinburgh style and its student evening, which were due to take place on Monday.

Westfield London and Westfield Stratford are likely to stay open, but a number of shops within them will close for the day, depending on what individual retailers decide to do.

The same goes for Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee and British Land's retail centres, which include Meadowhall in Sheffield, Whiteley in Fareham, Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh , Drake Circus in Plymouth, Giltbrook, Nottingham, Mostyn Champneys in Llandudno, and Forster Square in Bradford.

Landsec have also said its shopping centres will adhere to bank holiday opening times but retailers will make their own decisions.

Landsec's centres include Trinity Leeds, Bluewater in Kent, White Rose Centre in Leeds, Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, St David's Dewi Sant in Cardiff, Junction 32 in Yorkshire, Braintree Village in Essex, Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow, Lewisham Shopping Centre, West 12 Shopping Centre in Shepherd's Bush and more.

Manchester's Trafford Centre are yet to finalise and release plans on their website.

Post Office

Royal Mail will suspend its services on the day of the funeral, but at the Post Office, services will vary.

Of the Post Office's 11,500 branches, 114 of them are Crown Post Offices run directly by the Post Office and those 114 branches will be closed for the day.

But roughly 2,500 branches are run by a number of retailers like WH Smith, Tesco, Co-Op, Spar, and these businesses, although likely to close, will decide on their plans.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "The rest of our network of branches are operated by independent postmasters and typically are located in convenience stores. It will be the postmaster's decision whether to open on the day.

"On weekends, we usually have around 4,000 branches open and would normally expect a similar number to be open on a regular bank holiday.

"However, it may be that some independent postmasters, who would normally open their branch on a bank holiday, decide to close their branch on 19 September to mark the passing of Her Majesty."
