Watch and act bushfire warning for Nambeelup and Stake Hill, south of Perth

A watch and act bushfire warning is in place for parts of Nambeelup and Stake Hill, near Mandurah, south of Perth.

The alert level was downgraded from emergency overnight, affecting areas bound by Readheads Road, Bush Retreat, Scott Road, Nambeelup Brook, Dollyup Street and Patterson Road, in the Shire of Murray.

The blaze is moving in a westerly direction, with spot fires starting up to 300 metres ahead.

Residents are urged to leave via Lakes Road in an easterly direction if it is safe to do so.

Easterly winds fanning flames

DFES incident controller Gavin Eva said earlier yesterday the blaze was stationary, but still uncontained and out of control, however despite fears the fire would remain at emergency level it was downgraded to watch and act.

It comes after the threat level for two bushfires burning in Perth's south-east and the South West in Western Australia was downgraded.

However, there is still a possible threat to lives and homes in the suburb of Martin in the City of Gosnells, in Perth's south-east, in the area bounded by Canning Mills Road, Mills Road East, the Powerline Track, Suneca Road, and Versteeg Grove, near Korung National Park.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said the blaze was currently stationary, but the warning remained in place because of high winds putting pressure on containment lines.

DFES incident controller Adrian Hamill said overnight crews had done an "amazing job" of stopping the Perth Hills blaze gaining further ground and commended property owners for having bushfire plans in place.

He said people needed to remain vigilant with wind gusts of up to 80kph.

"This morning we have cooler temperatures but the wind is a significant factor," he said.

While the wind is expected to drop off this afternoon, Mr Hamill said gusts of up to 35kph would be a concern and could still cause embers to break containment lines.

He said they would coincide with the hottest part of the day later in the afternoon when fire behaviour was likely to be at its most intense.

Mr Hamill said thermal imaging would be used to identify hotspots and risk areas as about 130 firefighters and support staff remained at the fireground.

"What crews are doing now is working on fire edges and working back towards centre," he said.

The fire started near the intersection of Canning Road and Canning Mills Road in Canning Mills about 12:30pm yesterday.

DFES said it had burnt through 96 hectares so far and the cause was being investigated.

Firefighters caught in burnover

Some properties are less than 300 metres from where the fire has been contained and burning embers remain a threat.

Mr Hamill said he was pleased with how the fire had held behind containment lines overnight in the face of challenging conditions.

Firefighters worked along narrow "goat tracks" to access the blaze overnight and were restricted to their vehicles due to falling trees.

There was a "minor burnover" incident yesterday where a vehicle carrying two firefighters was impacted by the flames.

But the damage to the vehicle was superficial and the firefighters involved who stayed in the vehicle were reportedly "OK and in good spirits".

DFES is investigating the incident.

Farms and homes threatened near Kirup

A separate bushfire, in the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup in the South West, has burned through about 450 hectares of bushland.

A watch and act alert is in place after the emergency warning was downgraded this afternoon. The fire is contained, but not controlled.

The blaze is moving slowly in a west south-westerly direction, with anyone in the area bounded by Curdinup-Kirup Road, Ryall Road, and White Road near Kirup urged to take action.

WA Parks and Wildlife district fire coordinator Ed Hatherley said yesterday firefighters were focusing their efforts on farmland around Upper Capel Road, where there were a handful of properties.
