Brown University announced on Wednesday that a group of students who established a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus will be subject to disciplinary action for violating school policy. The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. when dozens of students erected a tent city on the main green area, under the observation of campus security personnel.
School officials released a statement indicating that 90 students involved in the protest have been notified of their breach of school regulations. According to Brown University, setting up encampments on the university's historic and residential greens is a direct violation of university policy, which was established in October 2011.
The statement emphasized that while protest is an acceptable form of expression at Brown, it becomes unacceptable when it contravenes university policies designed to safeguard the well-being of the Brown community and ensure that regular university operations are not disrupted.
The administration further stated that the Department of Public Safety on campus will continue to monitor the situation to prevent protests from interfering with the university's functions. Officials expressed concern over reports of violence, harassment, and intimidation at encampments on other campuses but noted that such behavior has not been observed at Brown University.
Any instances of violence, harassment, or intimidation would not be tolerated, as per the university's stance. Brown University remains committed to upholding a safe and respectful environment for all members of the university community.
