Brits hoping to go abroad after two years of unpredictable Covid restrictions now have to check if a confusing passport rule will prevent them from travelling.
Holidaymakers may be left baffled by the rule that came into force as a result of Brexit and the UK Government, and major airlines are said to be offering conflicting advice.
When the UK was part of the European Union, you only needed to make sure your passport wasn't expired to travel across the continent.
However, new rules as a result of Brexit say you need to see how long your passport has been valid, NorthWalesLive reports.
The UK Government website states that UK citizens should have a passport with an expiry date "valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave".
However, ABTA warns how much time needs to be left on your passport depends on where you’re travelling to.
To add to the confusion, it appears that the required length of time left on your passport that allows you to travel also varies depending on which airline you are flying with.
Polices appear to differ between EasyJet, Ryanair and British Airways.
If your passport is due to expire, you may be denied entry into the country that you are visiting.
The Post Office website states: "While most countries such as Australia, Canada and the USA, just need your passport to be valid for the length of your stay, other countries such as China, Thailand, Egypt and Turkey need at least six months.
"You need to have at least six months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe (not including Ireland).
"In general, many countries that require a visa to enter will require at least six months validity on your passport when entering the country, so make sure you find out whether your passport has long enough before it expires before you travel."
If you are flying with Ryanair, you need a valid passport to travel anywhere in the world.
If you're travelling outside the European Economic Area, your passport must be valid for the period of intended stay except if you travel to Jordan, Turkey, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
If you hold a non-EU passport, like a British passport, and are travelling into a Schengen member country you must make sure your passport is valid for at least three months from the date you will leave the Schengen member country.
There is an exception if you have a Schengen-issued residence permit or long-term visa.
If you are flying with EasyJet on an international flight, you must hold either a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity card or Passport, and, where required, a valid Visa.
The passport needs to be signed and in good condition and some countries require your passports need valid for a minimum of the period beyond your trip, usually three or six months.
For UK passport holders travelling to the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, your passport must have at least six months on it from the date of your departure.
Most European countries have a time frame of three months.
If you are flying with British Airways you need to have a passport or equivalent that will be valid for the duration of your trip. All children need their own passports, including infants under two years old.
