Brit locked up for two months over unpaid Qatar debt has flight home delayed

A British engineer who was locked up for two months over an unpaid debt in Qatar has had his flight home delayed.

Brian Glendinning was locked up in a Baghdad jail after he was arrested at Basrah airport when he arrived in Iraq to start a new job in September.

The dad of three from Kincardine, Fife, was detained on an Interpol Red Notice from Qatar over a debt owed to Qatar National Bank.

The 43 year old took a £20,000 loan while working in Doha in 2016, but was not able to keep up full repayments when he lost his job on sick leave at home in Scotland.

His debt was paid off by a mystery donor.

Brian was due to return to Edinburgh today but his flight has been delayed by stormy weather and he is expected to land tomorrow (Saturday).

Radha Stirling from Detained in Dubai said: "I spoke with Brian last night just before he went to the airport.

"He was excited to be coming and keen to discuss his shocking experience.

"You can imagine what he must have gone through at that moment.

"His family are frustrated and disappointed that he won't be arriving today and Brian will be exhausted on his return.

"The flights are problematic for the family in that most of them layover in Qatar or the UAE and Brian does not want to go to a Gulf country in case he is re-arrested.

"We will update the media and the public as to the details of his arrival as we know.

"It is expected to be tomorrow morning.

"His family, friends and potentially, his MP, Douglas Chapman will be there to meet him".
