A mum claims she was left shocked after her son found a dead slug inside a Cadbury Easter egg bought at a supermarket.
Sara Handley's child was horrified to discover the grim surprise in the product purchased from Waitrose in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, she claims.
After Sara's son, from Newport, opened the box, she says he was shocked to find a dead slug and its slime inside his Easter egg.
And the appalled mum took to Facebook to warn other parents to check their Easter eggs before consuming them.
The slug inside her son’s egg had left a slime trail and had started to melt into the chocolate.
One social media user was very concerned if the boy ate the slug, they commented: 'Wow! Screams Rat Lungworm disease, parasite very deadly if ingested'.
Other users took to social media in disgust and left many confused with one writing: "How does a slug survive inside a chocolate egg without eating the chocolate, plus the fact the eggs are produced from molten chocolate poured over a mould.
"Where would a slug secrete itself or even survive that process?"
Another was unsure how a slug could survive that long inside an Easter egg, saying: "Is this for real? I say as a gardener that slug looks quite healthy."
And a third user commented: "I confess to not being an entomologist, but I would guess that the slug in the photograph is alive - or very recently deceased.
"A dead slug is not lustrous for more than a few minutes. The slug in the photograph was almost certainly placed there in the minutes prior to the image being captured."
A Mondelez spokesperson, who owns Cadbury, said: “We’re sorry to hear about this experience.
"Quality is of paramount importance to us, and we will contact the customer so we can carry out a full and thorough investigation."
Mondelez International has owned Cadbury since 2010.
