A teenage boy has died after he was pulled from a river over the Nottinghamshire border in Barrow-upon-Soar. Leicestershire Police were called out overnight to reports of four teenage boys entering the River Soar in the village, near Wymeswold and Upper Broughton on the border.
Three of the four teens were found safe, police have confirmed. One boy, who has not been identified, was rescued from the water but died shortly after, Leicestershire Live reports.
The incident triggered a large-scale police search operation with a fire service specialist water rescue team assisted by a police helicopter.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "At 9.15pm yesterday (Saturday 13 May) officers were called to the area of Bridge Street in Barrow-upon-Soar by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.
"It was reported that four teenage boys had entered the water. Following a search of the water, one boy was rescued but was pronounced dead a short time later. The other three were found safe and received medical attention.
"Specially-trained officers are providing support to the boy’s family and are engaging with the other three boys. A file will be prepared for the coroner and identification of the deceased is a matter for HM Coroner."
Residents told of how a helicopter with a bright searchlight was seen circling the village. Others described the scale of the operation last night, with "masses of police officers" deployed to the area.
Bridge Street, Barrow Road and the surrounding area were all cordoned off.
