Boy, 6, trapped 33ft down Afghan well as rescuers in race against time to save him

A six-year-old boy has been trapped down a 33ft well in Afghanistan for the last two days as rescuers worked hard to save him.

In scenes reminiscent to those in Morocco two weeks ago where five-year-old Rayan Awram was trapped and ultimately found dead, emergency workers are trying to reach the boy before it is too late.

The youngster, named by locals as Haidar, has been stuck down the well in a remote Afghani village of Shokok in the south of the country.

Photos show the boy wedged against the side and is unable to move his arms and upper body.

Video shared on social media, including by officials of Afghanistan's new Taliban government, shows the tearful little boy talking to his father.

The dad is heard saying: "Are you OK, my son?

"Talk with me and don't cry, we are working to get you out."

"OK, I'll keep talking," the boy replies calmly.

The video was obtained by rescuers who lowered a camera down the narrow well by rope.

Abdullah Azzam, secretary to Deputy Prime Minister, tweeted: "A team is there with an ambulance, oxygen and other necessary things."

A trench has been dug so workers can reach the boy, and the rescue looks similar to how the attempt to rescue little Rayan was carried out in Morocco.

A second video has shown rescuers lowering food and drink down to the boy, and he appears to be eating and drinking.

Freelance writer Sebghatullah Sadid in Afghanistan tweeted to say Haidar's health condition is reported as well by medics.
