Birth coach teaching women to orgasm during labour says it's more effective than pain relief

A birth coach has said that having an orgasm while in labour helps make the experience a more positive one.

Jannine Markou is a prenatal coach and yoga teacher who has worked with labouring mums for over a decade. She decided to start working as a birth coach after experiencing trauma while giving birth to her first child.

The mum of two claims that the act of climaxing while giving birth helps women feel less inhibited during the labouring process and ultimately assists with their pain management. She says that her end goal is for clients to feel happy with their labour when it’s over.

Jannine said: “ I want them to have no guilt and no shame over it. I teach women to get out of their comfort zone and release their inhibitions and for them to know what they need in that moment.”

She coins this labour method as “orgasmic birth”. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that sexual pleasure during labour works as natural pain relief. Health studies have shown that the production of oxytocin, a hormone that presents itself during both sex and childbirth, can increase pain tolerance considerably.

One of Jannine’s clients backs up the theory, saying that climaxing helped her become more present while in labour. She added that the technique was ultimately a “blessing” that made the experience a more joyful one.

Jannine also recommends another surprising method of sitting on alleviating labour pains - sitting on the toilet. The trained yoga coach swears by movement during labour and also says that laughter can help ease symptoms, particularly in the early stages.

She adds: “Laughing helps during early labour and sitting in the toilet is also a great place to labour because you have inner knowing to soften and relax.”

Additionally, poses such as squatting, kneeling, and rocking back and forth can work as alternatives as opposed to the conventional method of giving birth on one’s back.
