Bin bags full of cats seen in Shanghai as police 'killing pets whose owners have Covid'

Horrifying videos have emerged of giant green bin bags stuffed with cats and dogs as Chinese officials continue to police the world's strictest lockdown.

The awful clip shows huge rubbish bags sitting on the side of the pavement as live cats move around inside.

The video was first shared on Twitter accompanied with the caption: "26 million people in lockdown in Shanghai.

"People are committing suicide from their balconies and pets from people getting tested positive for #Covid are being collected to be killed and slaughtered in #Shanghai / #China This is pure evil!"

Another clip released last week showed a health care worker beating a pet corgi to death after its owner tested positive for Covid.

Residents of Shanghai, China's largest city with 26million living there, have been living under a draconian lockdown for over a month.

Hungry residents have robbed grocery stores, and drones have been spotted flying over skyscrapers telling residents to "control your soul's desire for freedom," according to the South China Morning Post.

Anyone who tests positive for Covid will be forced to live in a cramped mass quarantine centre for an unspecified amount of time.

Harsh measures inside the centre include bizarre rules like lights being on 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, and no showers.

One Ukrainian expat, Jane Polbotko, 30, told the Wall Street Journal she didn't see darkness for almost three weeks.

She was pressured to stay among thousands of others at a facility in Shanghai and described it as "Covid prison".

Chinese authorities have justified the brutal containment measures as a way of controlling the city's spiralling Omicron cases.

But it would seem that pets are a concern for officials, with reports of cats and dogs being killed by Covid workers.

And the extermination of the animals is seriously damaging the mental health of some owners, who have been pushed to taking their own lives, it has been reported.

Pets of those who contract the virus are also reportedly being killed by Covid workers as they fear they could be spreading the deadly virus.

According to NationalWorld, viral footage from people in Shanghai shows a corgi chasing a van containing its owners after they tested positive and were being taken to a quarantine camp.

The owner wrote in an online group: "In the end, I thought I could let [the pet] loose outside to become a stray, at least it wouldn't starve to death."

But later a Covid prevention worker reportedly then hit the dog three times with a spade, killing it.

Apparently, hiding the animals isn't an option either as the lockdown staff will return to their homes to sterilise it and will find them.
