Bike man of Aberfeldy gives Ukrainian arrivals two wheels to go exploring

A kind man in Aberfeldy who repairs bikes as a hobby is helping to give Ukrainians new to the town some two-wheeled independence.

Peter Donaldson (61) is retired from a career working in renewables for SSE.

When he became aware of the cluster of host families taking in Ukrainian refugees in the town, he put out an appeal to get them bikes.

In just over two weeks he’s had over 30 donated bicycles left for him to fix and give to the new arrivals.

He said: “I’ve had over 30 bikes donated in the past two weeks, ranging from almost brand new to ones just usable for spares. I probably have enough adult and teenager bikes now but I’m still looking for a few smaller kids bikes. The response from all around Highland Perthshire has been amazing.

“I don’t think we can imagine what these families have been through and are still dealing with.

“I have great admiration for all the people who are trying to help and are opening their homes for families.

“The bike project was just something my wife, Jenny, and I thought we could do to help families settle in here. It will give the adults a little bit of independence and more importantly, the kids some fun.”

Peter said if anyone could provide children’s bikes and scooters, to please get in touch on 07775071226.
