In recent news, the family of Brian Wilson, the co-founder of The Beach Boys, has filed for a conservatorship on his behalf. The 81-year-old musician is reported to be suffering from a 'major neurocognitive disorder, such as dementia.' This decision was made following the passing of Brian's wife, Melinda.
In a statement released to PEOPLE, Wilson's family revealed that longtime family representatives, LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers, will serve as co-conservators of his person. The purpose of this conservatorship is to ensure that there are no drastic changes to Brian's household, and that he and his children living at home are properly cared for.
Gloria Ramos, who has been identified as Wilson's housekeeper, will also play a role in taking care of Brian and his family. The statement from Wilson's family emphasizes that the existing team at the house, along with Ramos, have been providing exceptional care for the family and will continue to do so.
Despite his current condition, the family wants to emphasize that Brian will still be able to enjoy the company of his family and friends, as well as continue working on his ongoing projects and participating in activities of his choice.
According to the court filing obtained by PEOPLE, it was stated that Brian Wilson is presently unable to meet his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter. This filing also highlighted the role Melinda Wilson played in caring for Brian's daily living needs, as he was unable to properly provide for himself.
Melinda, who passed away on January 30 at the age of 77, had been crucial in supporting Brian through his mental illness. The documents further revealed that she held an 'Advance Health Care Directive' as Brian's healthcare agent. However, since the directive did not designate a successor to Melinda, the court has been requested to appoint a conservator.
To fulfill this role, Sievers and Hard have been proposed as co-conservators due to their longstanding relationship with the Wilsons and the trust Brian has in them. Hard is already serving as Brian's agent under his power of attorney. Their primary objective is to ensure Brian's daily needs are met while he remains in his home.
According to the court documents, Brian's doctor mentioned that he would be unable to attend a court hearing. The doctor described Brian as easily distracted, frequently making irrelevant or incoherent utterances, and having a short attention span. Brian is currently undergoing treatment with medication that is intended to slow the progression of his illness.
Brian and Melinda Wilson tied the knot in 1995 and together adopted Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan, and Dash. Following Melinda's passing, Brian referred to her as his 'savior.' The court has scheduled a hearing for April 26 to address the conservatorship matter.
It is important to note that Brian also has two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, from his previous marriage. The outcome of the upcoming court hearing will likely have a significant impact on the future of Brian Wilson and his family.
