Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum have found success with their comic Minor Threats, which focuses on the trials of underappreciated D-list villains. Now, a background character from the comic is stepping into the limelight in a new mini-series titled From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly.
The duo, along with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, are behind this four-issue mini-series published by Dark Horse Comics. Barfly, also known as Sh!teater, is a character previously seen as a silent but intriguing humanoid fly in a punk jacket in the Threat comics. The story follows his journey to find his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City, offering a mix of humor and noir crime tale.
The character Barfly originated as a background figure drawn by Threat artist Scott Hepburn, who placed him in various scenes at The Lower Lair, a bar frequented by supervillains. Readers' curiosity about this character led to the development of the mini-series, exploring the life of a henchman when he no longer has a master to serve.
The mini-series will feature main cover art by Scott Hepburn and variant covers by Browne, Martín Morazzo, Dan Hipp, and another artist yet to be revealed. Minor Threats, which debuted in August 2022, offered a fresh perspective on the superhero genre by focusing on D-list supervillains. The success of the initial series led to the creation of a universe, including spinoffs like The Alternates and the upcoming sequel Minor Threats 2.
Oswalt and Blum, known for their love of comics, are excited to collaborate with talented creators in expanding their universe. The first issue of Barfly is available for pre-order at local comic shops and is set to release on July 10, offering readers a unique and entertaining take on the world of supervillains.
