Ayrshire beauty spots as you've never seen them before as photographs go viral

Stevenston might not immediately spring to mind when planning a day out or holiday.

It's perhaps fair to say the North Ayrshire town ranks down the list in terms of Ayrshire beauty spots and attractions to visit.

But that could all be about to change thanks to one photographer whose work has thrown the former coal mining hotspot firmly in the national spotlight.

A photograph of a stunning sunset over Stevenston beach has been confirmed as VisitScotland’s most popular social media post of Ayrshire & Arran in 2021.

The sky ablaze over the coastline was captured by Darren Tolmie (@darren655) and liked just over 46,000 times when it was shared on VisitScotland’s Instagram account.

That made it the highest performing post of the region last year, beating an image of a truly iconic Ayrshire visitor attraction into second place.

That honour belonged to snapper Craig O'Neill (@lifeofcraigo) who captured a dramatic aerial shot of Culzean Castle perched on the cliff top.

The image of the historic home of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis, designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century, attracted just over 41,000 likes.

VisitScotland regional director Gordon Smith said: “The rich history and vibrancy of Ayrshire & Arran and the stunning scenery and sights on offer in the wider area are a fantastic source of inspiration for photographers and these images have captured some of the many reasons visitors are drawn to the region.

“VisitScotland’s social media channels have played a significant role in the last two years in continuing to keep Scotland front of mind and offering inspiration to our global audiences.

"We know there is pent-up demand for travel, and we want to ensure that we inspire potential visitors with what Scotland has to offer and make it their first-choice destination when they can travel.

“Our marketing activity reflects our drive to attract visitors to Scotland throughout the year.

"By adopting a regional and geographic approach, we are showcasing the diversity that Scotland has to offer and ensuring that tourism brings benefits to communities right across the country”

Ayrshire & Arran destination alliance CEO, Daniel Steel, added “With coasts and countryside, mainland and islands, bustling towns and wide-open spaces, accessibility and rural escape, heritage and innovation - Ayrshire & Arran has always provided inspiration for picture postcard moments.

"But the past two years have been full of uncertainty and challenges. Terms like work life balance have been strained, and our mental health has been constantly tested.

"But that has also inspired many people to find their balance with the places around them. Whether it was fitting in a lunchtime time walk or getting up early to see the sunrise, it has created some incredible moments, both on and off camera.

"Seeing these shared across social media channels has not only served to remind people of just how special this region is - it has also inspired locals and visitors alike to explore and enjoy Ayrshire & Arran to create their own special moments too.”
