Autosport magazine: Can Norris be 2025 F1 world champion?

McLaren’s world championship leader Lando Norris is the cover star of the latest Autosport monthly magazine, out today (10 April).

It’s hard to argue that Max Verstappen isn’t the most complete driver currently on the Formula 1 grid, but Norris has looked like the closest thing to a challenger to the Dutchman over the past year.

In fact, as Norris tells Alex Kalinauckas in our May cover feature, the Briton reckons he really started to understand what was needed to run at the front when chasing Verstappen in 2023. Now, having learned from his up-against-it title challenge in 2024 and armed with what appears to be the best car in the form of the McLaren MCL39, there’s a feeling it could be his year.

Norris talks about his mindset, the advantage of having the rapid Oscar Piastri as his team-mate, and the drivers he thinks are most likely to challenge in 2025.

While Red Bull’s second-car struggles have continued, leading to Liam Lawson losing his drive after just two grands prix, sister squad Racing Bulls has been quietly impressive. Jake Boxall-Legge takes a look at the changes that have boosted the team formerly known as AlphaTauri and Toro Rosso, while Oleg Karpov has an enlightening chat with Sauber F1 rookie Gabriel Bortoleto.

Outside of F1, Oliver Rowland has been one of the most impressive British single-seater racers in recent times. The Formula E points leader talks to James Newbold about his return to Nissan and challenge to defeat the championship powerhouses of Porsche and Jaguar in our Single Seaters section, while Rowland’s fellow McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Tom Gamble speaks to Gary Watkins about his big Aston Martin Hypercar chance.

The British Touring Car Championship kicks off at Donington Park at the end of the month. Marcus Simmons interviews returning triple champion Gordon Shedden and picks out the key things to watch in our season preview.

Stephen Lickorish is your guide to the TOCA support categories in our National section, which also looks ahead to the GB3 campaign and features another star car from club motorsport.

There has been much discussion about the future of the World Rally Championship in recent months. Tom Howard explains where things currently sit and what the key stakeholders think, as well as reviewing the drivers’ response to the FIA’s recent clampdown on swearing.

We’ll be speaking to more key motorsport players next time as we build up towards the Monaco GP, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours, so look out for our June issue from 8 May.
