A spectator has experienced a medical issue during the Alex De Minaur and Francisco Cerundolo match at the Australian Open today, causing a temporary halt in play.
The incident occurred as Melbourne experienced a sweltering day with temperatures set to hit a scorching 31°C. Play came to a sudden halt during the second set when the chair umpire announced a break due to a medical issue in the stands.
“We have a halt in play during the second set as an unwell spectator is assisted out of the stands,” reported Wide World of Sports.
Alex de Minaur had already dropped the first set 7-5 when the medical incident unfolded. Spectators nearby assisted the unwell individual, though the exact cause of the issue remains unconfirmed, however Wide World of Sports reported that it was 28°C at the time of the incident.
This isn’t the first time the Australian Open has seen a medical issue this year. Before the tournament even kicked off, a ball girl collapsed during the opening ceremony, as reported by 9News.
Thankfully, a Tennis Australia spokesperson later confirmed the girl was “absolutely fine”.
The Australian Open has measures in place to manage extreme heat. They introduced the Extreme Heat Policy including a Heat Stress Scale in 2019, which can determine possible suspension of play on outdoor courts when conditions become too harsh, per 360 Info.
The game has since resumed and Francisco Cerundolo has gone 6-5 up with a hold of serve.
With temperatures set to rise tomorrow in Melbourne with a top of 33°C, remember to take proper sun care precautions and look after yourself.
