Inside abandoned Glasgow townhouse that 'Jumanji would be proud of'

An abandoned Glasgow townhouse flat is being made available for auction and the pictures of the decayed interior are something else.

The B-listed property, a basement flat at 87 Wilton Street, Maryhill, has lain vacant so long that nature has taken over, with some rooms practically covered in vegetation. Auction House Scotland, who have listed the flat on their auction website, describe it as the kind of place "Jumanji would be proud of" - and we can see why.

Mystery surrounds the original use of the building, which dates from around 1860 and boasts a handsome sandstone frontage, but it was latterly used for commercial purpose before becoming derelict.

Photos of the historic flat show reveal that much of it is in a sorry state, with many of the rooms open to the elements after suffering fire damage and vandalism over the years. Nevertheless, the auctioneers say the property is "a rare and unique development opportunity" with "enormous potential".

Previous planning approval was granted to transform the property, creating four bedrooms and an underground car park, however, the application fell through and the building has remained empty and neglected.

In their description of the property, Auction House Scotland wrote: "Fire damaged in the past this building needs a little more then TLC and is ready and waiting for a new owner with an imagination and property passion to transform this into an amazing west end development.

"There is a huge hall to the rear of this building, thought to be a former dance hall, community hall or scout hall, with an impressive floor space and basement level, as well as a tall arched ceiling and mezzanine.

"We have been advised that plans had been submitted for development some twenty years ago, but no work was started. The hall has become dilapidated in recent years, so will be a blank slate for a developer."

The Wilton Street property is scheduled to go up for auction at 2pm on January 26, 2023 at the Radisson Red, 25 Tunnel Street, Glasgow.
