Asda is the UK's cheapest supermarket for Easter egg bargain hunters

Easter egg bargain hunters will shell out less at Asda, a choc poll reveals.

Researchers compared branded eggs at eight leading supermarkets and checked each one for the best price.

Asda was cheaper or the same price for four Easter eggs, while Lidl and Morrisons were cheaper or the same price for three eggs each, says Which?

Britain’s priciest Easter treat is a £13 Ferrero Rocher Egg at Sainsbury’s.

The same egg is £3 less at Asda and Tesco, and a pound less from the Ocado home delivery service.

In contrast, a giant Cadbury Crunchie Egg from Asda is one of this year’s best value treats, says consumer champion Which?

At £8.43, it’s nearly twice as big as the 275g Ferrero Rocher version and more than £4.50 cheaper. The same 515g Cadbury Crunchie treat cost £12 at Tesco and Ocado.

Researchers compared branded eggs at eight leading supermarkets and checked each one for the best price.

Morrisons had the best value Dairy Milk Egg and Cadbury Mini Eggs at £8 each. They were £2 cheaper than Tesco, Britain’s biggest retailer.

But Sainsbury’s had the cheapest mini egg - a 31g Cadbury Dairy Milk with Oreo costing just 40p. The same egg was 60p at Morrisons and Waitrose.

Ocado and Waitrose weren’t the cheapest for any of the eggs in the Which? Easter basket.

A 99p Cadbury Creme Egg from Aldi, Asda and Lidl cost £1.57 at Waitrose.

Last year Britons shelled out £319million on Easter eggs, down from £33m in 2020 and £347m in 2019, according to data firm Kantar.

Not all the eggs checked by Which? were available at every supermarket. It says budget chains Aldi and Lidl stock fewer branded products than traditional supermarkets.

Which? money editor Reena Sewraz said: “With a difference of over £3.50 on a giant Easter egg, our analysis shows how important it is to shop around, especially if you have a specific brand in mind.

“Anyone looking to stretch their cash even further should check the supermarket’s own brand options which might be just as tasty for a fraction of the price.”
