Asda Christmas advert for 2019 tells story of little girl inspired by her Grandad

Halloween already seems like a distant memory and now, just two days into November, the Christmas adverts are making their debuts.

Asda , which bases its festive campaign on making Christmas "extra special", unveiled its heartwarming advert to millions of viewers during Saturday night's X Factor Celebrity.

The story follows a young girl - Tilly- and her brother Jack as they walk home on a wintry night, the Northern lights ablaze with colour above their heads.

But suddenly, Tilly remembers how her grandfather once told her the Northern Lights were "Santa’s leftover magic" and, determined to turn her grey village into a wonderful winter wonderland, she sets out to capture the magic in the skies.

Crafting a makeshift rod using her grandad’s walking stick with a glass pickle jar on the end, Tilly manages to bottle up the Northern Lights while her brother looks on in disbelief.

Before long, the children scamper through their village, spreading Christmas cheer to everything in their path.

An ordinary man is transformed to a snowman, the local cat gets a fabulous new jumper, while people waiting at the bus stop turn in to gingerbread people and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree sprouts out of the ground.

Then suddenly, the magic is all gone. Tilly has spread so much Christmas joy and excitement, she's used it all up.

Looking forlorn, Tilly heads back to her bed while big brother is dismayed at her sadness. But then he has a brainwave and makes sure there is an extra special surprise for her when she wakes up the following morning.

The advert ends with Asda's message: "Let's Make Christmas Extra Special".

For Christmas 2019, Asda are celebrating those people who go the extra mile during the festive season, making it a special time for all.

Behind the scenes, Asda will be giving £1million to up to 1,500 charities across the UK - more than double than last year.

Asda has "green token" boxes in 387 stores.

Every time customers shops in a store they can pick up a green token and vote for one of three local charities.

The boxes will be wrapped to look like a special green jar, similar to the one Tilly used to spread Christmas magic, and the charity with the most green tokens in each store will get an extra £1,000, plus two runners up with get £500.

The ad has been created to support Asda's Fight Hunger Create Change initiative, which is a partnership between FareShare and the Trussell Trust.

Asda’s chief customer officer Andy Murray, said: “We know the most important thing to our customers at Christmas is spending time with family and friends.

"These are the people who make Christmas special and they’re willing to go the extra mile to make sure the occasion is truly magical."
