Antiques Roadshow guest gobsmacked by true value of 'fake' diamond brooch

A guest on BBC's Antiques Roadshow was left gobsmacked after the true value of her brooch was revealed.

Antique expert Joanna Hardy met with the owner of a jewellery collection who believed her beloved diamonds were actually fake.

In the episode that aired on Sunday, April 30, the expert met with the guest in Portchester Castle in Hampshire. However, the guest wasn't that enthusiastic about her own collection - without realising the true value of the pieces.

Speaking to the woman, Joanna said: “There were two comments you made when you saw me laying out your jewels here.

“One was, ‘Gosh, I haven’t seen these in a very long time' and the second thing was that you were hoping they were all real.”

To which the guest replied: “Exactly. So I seriously hope they are real!”

The Antiques Roadshow expert described the items as “eclectic” before asking the guest how she came to own the fascinating pieces. The Mirror writes that the guest then admitted they had been gifted to her by an ex-boyfriend.

Joanna joked: "He might be watching thinking, ‘Why did I give her all those?'"

As the expert looked over the pieces, which included a pair of ruby earrings and a 1920s Rolex, the woman admitted: “I don’t wear any of this. I feel really bad that I don’t wear any of it. I haven’t even got them out the cupboard for a very long time.”

Joanna paid special attention to a pair of brooches made of real diamonds and said: “They’re all real, everything is real.”

The Antiques Roadshow expert then singled out a sapphire brooch embellished with the flag of the Royal London Yacht Club.

“This is beautifully made,” Joanna remarked, referring to the flag brooch, before noting that the pair of brooches together would fetch the highest value.

Joanna revealed the diamond brooch would fetch between £3,000-4,000 at auction while the sapphire flag brooch was worth £3,000.

“Golly,” the guest replied. “And I didn’t even know if it was real so that’s really impressive. Thank you, wow!”

The Antiques Roadshow expert went on to reveal the sum total of the guest's jewellery collection was between £13,000 and £15,000.

“That’s a very nice surprise,” the guest added before quipping: “Why on earth did I let him go?"
