An American’s reaction to trying British cheese for the first time has gone viral online.
The Reddit user took the Casual UK subreddit to share their experience.
“Not from UK, but I finally tried some real UK cheddar cheese and I feel I’ve been lied to my whole life,” the post reads.
“I picked up some Wyke Vintage aged cheddar at my local Costco and it is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.”
Vintage Reserve Secret Recipe Cheddar is produced by UK brand Wyke Farms and sold in select US stores. The cheese is aged over the course of 15 months.
“In the US, we normally get this soft, waxy orange-coloured cheddar that comparatively has very little cheese flavour,” the user continued. “This UK cheddar is white, has a deep, rich flavour, and kind of crumbles like a good parmigiano.”

They concluded: “UK does not f**k around with its cheese. I wonder what else I’ve been missing out on.”
Over 1,800 users responded to the initial post, with most suggesting other British cheeses for the poster to try. The suggestions included cave-aged cheddar and Somerset brie.
The post also sparked some debate about French and Italian cheeses.
One user wrote: “In terms of my own personal preference I prefer UK cheese over Italian but still think France reigns supreme.”
Another commented: “Even the French begrudgingly admit that a good mature cheddar is a very special cheese. They have nothing quite like it even though they have so many sublime cheeses. The French know even if they don’t wanna admit it, we can cheese too!”
