Ambulance collides with car in Scots town as driver taken to hospital

The driver of a car involved in a collision with an ambulance on an emergency run has been taken to hospital.

Emergency services were called to the A904 Ladysmill in Falkirk at its junction with Thornhill Road shortly after 10am on Friday. Images from the scene show the ambulance at a standstill with extensive damage to its front end.

A Volvo SUV was seen to be at a stop immediately in front of the emergency vehicle, and police officers are seen standing at the scene, which has been coned off. A fire engine was requested to provide assistance but left the scene shortly afterwards, as the occupants of each vehicle had been extracted prior to their arrival.

Eyewitnesses suggested that the ambulance had been responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision. This has since been confirmed by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

An ambulance spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our ambulances and a car at the junction of Ladysmill and Thornhill Road, Falkirk. The driver of the car was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital and the SAS crew and student paramedic on-board the ambulance were not injured as a result of incident.

"The ambulance, which was on its way to an emergency call, was not transporting any patients and an alternative resource was sent to the original call.”

Police say the driver of the Volvo has been taken to hospital but the ambulance crew was not injured. Officers have begun an investigation into the cause of the collision.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10am on Friday, 3 February 2023, police were called to a two-vehicle road crash involving an ambulance and a Volvo car on Ladysmill at its junction with Thornhill Road, Falkirk. The driver of the Volvo has been taken by ambulance to Forth Valley Hospital.

"No reports of any injuries to ambulance personnel. The road is closed to allow removal of vehicle and enquiries are ongoing in to the circumstances surrounding the crash."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We received a call to attend a road traffic collision on Ladysmill, Falkirk, at 10.14am on Friday February 3.

"Upon arrival crews were informed that everyone was out of their vehicles. Our assistance was not required and we left the scene at 10.24am."
