Netflix is looking to make a big jump into live sports, but Amazon is standing in its way.
Puck's John Ourand reported last week that Netflix (NFLX) is expected to carry the NFL's two-game Christmas Day slate for the 2024 season, which would be the first time that the streaming giant would air a live sporting event for any of the four major sports.
However, a new report from Puck on Monday claims that Amazon is trying to outbid Netflix for the rights to those games.

Ourand said that Amazon (AMZN) , which is in the early years of an 11-year deal paying $1 billion per year to the NFL to air "Thursday Night Football" on Prime Video, is trying to add the package as another way to promote its other businesses, like its e-commerce platform.
Amazon has adapted the same strategy for airing the NFL's Black Friday games, which the company paid $100 million to air last year for the first time in the league's history.

Despite Amazon's bid, Netflix is still the frontrunner to land the Christmas Day rights, per Ourand, as the move would allow the NFL to create a relationship with another of the top streamers.

It would also be a connection with a third of the four "FANG" tech companies as the NFL already works with Google (GOOG) , which owns the rights to NFL's "Sunday Ticket" on YouTube TV.
