A man who allegedly fired gunshots at a car full of people, carjacked another vehicle then evaded police has been found dead.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was found unresponsive in a stolen Volvo station wagon with what was believed to be a self-inflicted head wound on the Great Eastern Highway in Merredin about midnight on Sunday.

Emergency services performed CPR but he could not be revived.

It's alleged on Saturday evening, the man and a woman fired gunshots at a group of five people who stopped to assist them on the Albany Highway in Bannister.

The group, travelling in a Mitsubishi Triton ute, came across a crashed Holden Commodore but when they got out of the car to help, the man allegedly shot at them.

They fled the scene without being injured.

The man and woman then allegedly stole a Volvo BZ station wagon at gunpoint from a couple who had also stopped at the crash scene to assist.

Police followed the stolen Volvo and eventually arrested the 24-year-old woman about 11.45pm.

The man was then found fatally injured in the vehicle about 20 minutes later.

Major crime detectives are investigating the circumstances of his death.

Anyone who saw the stolen Volvo in the Bannister and Merredin areas is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
