New data has revealed that pancake ingredients are nearly a third as expensive as last year, costing on average £11.90 compared to £8.93 in 2022. As costs on everyday essentials soar, research from Little-Loans.com has highlighted just how much food shopping can cost for Brits, particularly when comparing the prices from 2022.
To find out how much more Pancake Day will cost Brits in 2023 compared to 2022, consumer finance experts at Little-Loans.com compared supermarket pancake data that they had recorded in 2022, with today’s costs. In both 2022 and 2023, data was collated from eight leading supermarkets to uncover which shop offered the cheapest pancake ingredients.
The supermarkets were then ranked from one to eight in terms of their value for money, with one being the best value and eight being the least. The items included in the costings were:
Plain white flour
Eggs
Milk
Nutella
Syrup
Lemon juice
Strawberries
Blueberries
The findings show that every supermarket in the study has unsurprisingly increased their prices. Tesco had the biggest price increase from 2022 to 2023, coming in at a 43.12% increase.
Although M&S was the most expensive supermarket in 2023, it had the smallest price increase, charging only 5.76% more for pancake ingredients compared to last year. On average, the eight supermarkets have raised prices of pancake day ingredients by 27% compared to last year.
In the 2023 data, Little-Loans.com found that Aldi was the cheapest supermarket to shop for your ingredients, for a total price of £8.95.
ASDA was coming in at £10.28 and Lidl at £10.74, they too proved to be a cost-efficient supermarket very much in the running. However, it was M&S that came in at a mighty £12.83, nearly a third as much as the likes of Aldi, clearly showing that they are the much more expensive option for this year’s pancake essentials.

Dan Whittaker from Little-Loans.com said: “Aldi has beaten the competitors for a second time, proving themselves to be the UK’s cheapest supermarket to stock up on Pancake Day ingredients. Another clear win for the second year in a row.
“Yet the most alarming piece of data is the sheer price increase in all supermarkets. This in itself proves the rise in the cost of living. Small, everyday items are dramatically rising in price and families are having to spend wisely to cope with these constraints.
