Aldi named cheapest UK supermarket for fourth month in a row beating out Lidl

Aldi has once again been named the UK's cheapest supermarket for the fourth consecutive month in a row - undercutting its rivals by over £23 for the same basket of items.

Households have been hit with soaring costs at the supermarket during the cost of living crisis, due to soaring inflation rates that have reached record-highs this year.

Which is why it can be handy to know where you can pickup your household essentials for less, and it looks like the budget chain is continuing to offer the lowest costs. The German grocer retained its title in the latest monthly price comparison of the big supermarkets from Which?, where a basket of 48 items was compared.

The consumer champion group looked at the cost of a basket of 48 items, including groceries and household essentials, across eight major UK supermarkets.

Aldi was found to be still be the cheapest supermarket with a total that came to just £75.61 - beating their rival Lidl, which came in second with £77.45. It means that there was only a £1.81 difference between the two popular discounted supermarkets.

Asda was the third cheapest supermarket with £84.87, while Sainsbury's continues to hold onto fourth place with a total of £86.34.

The UK's biggest supermarket Tesco continues to remain in fifth place, after it was overtaken by Sainsbury's a few months ago, with a total of £7.37.

Aldi has gained popularity this year as shoppers flock to stores for lower costs (Which?)

At Morrisons, the same basket of 48 items would set shoppers back £94.38.

Ocado and Waitrose continue to reign supreme as the UK's most premium supermarkets, with a total of £95.51 and £99.40, respectively.

It means that Aldi is £23.79 cheaper than Waitrose, which continues to be the most expensive supermarket at the moment.

The latest price comparison comes as Aldi recently overtook Morrisons as the UK's fourth largest supermarket, following a surge in customers during the cost of living crisis.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “The upcoming months remain uncertain for so many across the UK, and we want to help make this difficult time a little easier for our valued customers.

"We are committed to providing our customers with the very best quality at prices that don’t break the bank, and we’re thrilled to be yet again recognised as the UK’s cheapest supermarket by Which?.”
