Aldi named as the cheapest supermarket for 'big shop' as Lidl misses out

The cheapest UK supermarket for the 'big shop' has officially been revealed, with major supermarkets including Lidl, Asda and Tesco missing out on the crown.

A recent price comparison from Which? has found that budget supermarket Aldi is offering shoppers the lowest price for a big shop of everyday household and grocery essentials. The consumer champion website found that the German grocer was over £25 cheaper than their supermarket rivals based on a basket of 52 items.

It comes as shoppers across the UK have been hit with soaring costs of food on supermarket shelves after shop inflation levels reached a 14-year high. Latest figures have shown that food inflation levels jumped to 5.6% in June, up from 4.3% in May.

Which? found that Aldi took the crown for the UK's cheapest supermarket with a total of £75.61. The popular supermarket chain was also recently found to be 19% cheaper than the Big Four supermarkets for a basket of 33 everyday items in May.

Rival supermarket Lidl narrowly missed out on the title with a slightly more expensive total of £76.99.

The two discounted supermarkets have seen a rise in popularity recently, as the cost of living crisis has seen shoppers change up their shopping habits. Rising prices have forced shoppers to switch to discounted supermarkets and value brands to keep their costs low.

Asda shoppers would find themselves paying £85.22 for the same basket of items, which was nearly £10 more expensive than Aldi. Tesco came in fourth with a total of £86.63, while shoppers at Sainsbury's would find themselves paying £87.24. Morrisons came in sixth with a total of £91.03.

Waitrose and Ocado continue offer shoppers the highest prices for their everyday essentials, with the latter coming to a total of £97.50. Premium supermarket Waitrose was once again the dearest, with a total of £101.14 - £25.53 dearer than the same big shop at Aldi.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “At Aldi, we’re dedicated to ensuring our customers have access to the highest quality products at unbeatable prices and we’re thrilled to be recognised as the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket.”
