Aldi crowned cheapest supermarket for Christmas dinner essentials at £2.71 per person

Aldi has been crowned as the cheapest supermarket for Christmas dinner ingredients this year - with a total that comes to less than £3 per head.

With the big day less than two weeks away, shoppers will be planning their festive feast. But with the current cost of living crisis and soaring inflation rates, food might be pricier this year.

FCA-regulated credit broker Cashlady.com conducted research into the prices of key roast dinner ingredients from eight of the UK's leading supermarkets and found that Aldi is the best choice for those looking to save some pennies this year.

Ingredients in the price research included a whole turkey, roast potatoes, carrots, Brussel sprouts, red cabbage, gravy granules, stuffing, cranberry sauce and stuffing.

Aldi came out on top with a total of just £24.43, meaning that it covers the cost of a full roast dinner for 8-10 people at approximately just £2.71 per person.

It comes just as shoppers across the country were hit with the disheartening news that food price inflation had soared to a 45 year-high of 16.2 per cent, with basics seeing the biggest increase.

Asda was found to be the second cheapest for the same items, with a total coming to £25.84. Meanwhile, Tesco came third place with a total of £26.33.

Interestingly, Aldi's budget priced rival, Lidl, only came in fourth place, as its total for the exact same ingredients would cost shoppers £28.71.

It was then followed by Morrisons with a total of £30. 87 and then Sainsbury's, which was almost a whopping £20 more expensive, at £48.15.

Waitrose was found to be the most expensive at almost £35 more expensive than Aldi (PA)

On the pricier side, M&S shoppers would find themselves paying out a total of £57.84 - making it almost double the price for the same list as Aldi.

The most expensive supermarket, Waitrose, came in at an eye-watering £60.58, which is almost a whopping £35 more expensive than the budget supermarket chain.

Commenting on the findings, CashLady.com Consumer Finance Expert, Dan Whittaker said: "With Christmas 2022 being the first time that many families will be celebrating together since the pandemic, Brits across the nation will be looking forward to their roast dinner this year more than ever. As the centrepiece of the day, it will be reassuring to know that this December, you and your family can enjoy Christmas day without having to break your bank in the process."

"If you look in the right places, a delicious festive meal can be bought for as little as £24, feeding between 8 and 10 guests – even more cause for celebration!"
