Abandoned Edinburgh New Town restaurant set to become new specialist coffee shop

A new independent coffee chain is set to replace a former vegetarian mainstay in Edinburgh’s New Town.

The Liverpool based coffee shop and roastery, 92 Degrees has submitted plans to redecorate the shopfront at 92 Hanover Street, indicating the vacant building will soon become a new coffee outlet.

The address was previously known as Henderson’s, Edinburgh’s longest running vegetarian cafe serving soups and salads.

Henderson’s closed its doors in 2020 after nearly 60 years in business, and the building has since appeared to be vacant. However, the current planning application from 92 Degrees has strongly indicated that the independent coffee shop has firm plans to move into the building.

Henderson’s had been passed down through three generations before Covid-19 lockdowns forced the business into permanent closure. On Tuesday Edinburgh’s City Council published a public planning application to “redecorate the shop front to represent the incoming tenant’s branding and style.”

The application was filed on behalf of 92 Degrees, and revealed plans to repaint signs and barriers in line with the company style and install branded light signage in the windows.

The storefront will be 92 Degrees’ debut in the Scottish Capital. However, the company already has shops in Liverpool, London, Leeds, Southport and Manchester.

There are no dates or announcements online about the store opening, and the planning application for redecorations is still pending council approval.
