Online shopping platform Temu has recalled a fluffy, rainbow jumper after an eight-year-old Queensland girl suffered burns to 13 per cent of her body while wearing the children’s clothing item.
Daniella Jacobs-Herd received the glow-in-the-dark unicorn jumper from her Grandmother for her eighth birthday. Six months later in July 2024, Daniella wore her favourite jumper to her mother’s birthday celebrations in the backyard of their Hervey Bay home. There, a gust of wind blew embers from a fire pit onto Daniella, igniting the Temu-bought jumper “in a split second”.
Daniella was airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital where she stayed for eight weeks, undergoing skin graft operations for burns to her face, and third-degree burns to her right hand, upper arm and chest. She is expected to need further skin graft surgeries as she ages.
According to the ABC, Daniella’s mother, Hannah, is engaging with legal representation to investigate a potential compensation claim with Temu. However, a Temu spokesperson said the online shopping platform was assisting with the communications between Hannah and the manufacturer.
Following the incident, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) ruled that the jumper didn’t comply with the mandatory standards for nightwear for children because it didn’t have a fire warning label.
Around four months later, Temu issued a voluntary recall notice for the item after consulting with the ACCC. Consumers were advised to stop using the product immediately, keep it out of reach of children, destroy and dispose of the product.
According to ACCC Product Safety, customers who have purchaed the product will recieve a full refund from Temu on behalf of the trader, Sunshine Towels.
Hannah has created a GoFundMe page to support Daniella’s medical bills. You can find it HERE.
