The Coordination Committee or CorCom, a conglomeration of six banned armed groups in Manipur, has announced the boycott of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the State on February 22 to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In a statement on Sunday, the CorCom said there would be a “complete lockdown” from 1 p.m. until the Prime Minister left the State.
While emergency services and media persons have been exempted from the purview of the boycott, people have been asked not to venture out or take part in the functions to be addressed by Mr. Modi.
To address rally
The Prime Minister is scheduled to address a rally near State capital Imphal. He will also meet senior BJP ministers and party workers to discuss strategies for the two-phase elections on February 28 and March 5.
The CorCom had given a similar boycott call during the Prime Minister’s visit to the State for inaugurating 13 projects and laying the foundation stone for nine others. These projects were worth ₹4,800 crore.
The CorCom had earlier said Mr. Modi’s visit would not translate into development for Manipur and that he represented New Delhi’s control over the people.
