NEW YORK — Three firefighters were seriously injured Friday as a massive blaze tore through a Staten Island home and caused a section of the building to collapse, FDNY officials said.
The fire erupted inside a two-story Shotwell Avenue home near Waring Avenue in Arden Heights at about 1:30 a.m. and quickly raged out of control.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and were met with heavy fire, an FDNY source said.
Within an hour the blaze had reached four alarms, bringing hundreds of firefighters to the scene.
As firefighters fought the blaze, the back of the building collapsed, leading to at least two “mayday” calls of firefighters caught in the rubble, according to preliminary radio transmissions from the fire scene.
A third firefighter jumped out a window as the building began to break apart, an FDNY source said.
All three firefighters were taken to Staten Island University North Hospital for treatment.
The fire was brought under control at about 2:30 p.m., officials said. The cause of the blaze wasn’t immediately known.
