1970s Wimpy menu and prices with 16p burger and 51p steak with all the trimmings

If you want to buy a burger these days, you're spoilt for choice with McDonald's, Burger King, Five Guys, and many more posh burger outlets to choose from.

But back in the 1970s and 1980s, Wimpy was still the go-to burger joint in Britain.

Originating in Bloomington, USA, in 1932, the first restaurant in Britain, serving the first ever hamburger-based meal in this country, opened at Lyons Corner House in London in 1954.

By 1970, Wimpy was a global favourite and there were more than 1,000 outlets in 23 countries around the world - including branches in Liverpool city centre, Runcorn, Bootle and Birkenhead.

In a recently, rediscovered menu from the 1970s, you can check out some of the tasty favourites and crazy prices from the era: Wimpy Burger 16p; Wimpy Cheeseburger, 21p; and Wimpy Kingsize, 31p.

And what about the meals? A Wimpy Grill sold at 36p; a Wimpy Special Grill was 41p; and the top of the range Wimpy International, including steak and all the trimmings, was 51p.

One item on the menu which folk might especially remember was the Wimpy Bender - a wonderfully spicy sausage curled around half a tomato.

Elsewhere, a Whippsy - the brand's own milkshake - was 17p, while a knickerbocker glory could be yours for 25p.

It's worth remembering, of course, if these prices seem ludicrously inexpensive, in 1976 the average weekly wage was £70 for a man and £45 for a woman.

The last Wimpy in Liverpool city centre finally closed in 2011 and former Wimpys in Runcorn and Bootle now operate under different brands.

But the last remaining Wimpy on Merseyside can be found in Princes Pavement, in the Grange & Pyramids shopping complex in the middle of Birkenhead.

What's more, they're still selling the old favourites and serving them on proper plates with proper cutlery.

Recent TripAdvisor reviews of the Wirral restaurant have said Wimpy makes the “best burger in Birkenhead”.

Another said: “My partner and I love this place! One of the most friendliest service I have ever had.

“The staff are always happy to help with anything and always give their time to chat to the customers. Amazing service! The food is always lovely and the portion sizes are perfect. I can't wait to return.”

Another said: “Imagine a McDonalds or Burger King with a warmer personal touch. I did not feel like a face in a busy queue to be whizzed through. This Wimpy was lovely and relaxed.”

In 1974, there was a new kid on the UK fast food block - the American giant McDonald's, with the brand opening on Lord Street in Liverpool in 1985.

Crucially, McDonald's sold their burgers and fries over the counter, and Wimpy which employed traditional table service was forced to change tack.

Later, the arrival of Burger King provided another major competitor and the number of Wimpys in the UK gradually decreased.

Today there are 64 Wimpy locations around the UK - including 16 in London.
