The kitchen backsplash is a versatile design feature: its highly practical nature ensures the space is easy to clean post-cooking, yet it's a design element you can get creative with. Zooey Deschanel champions this creativity with a recent Instagram post channeling a vintage-inspired tiled splashback wall.
In the cookery demonstration video, Deschanel gives us another reason to be inspired by her quirky design tastes. Her home, where she resides with partner Jonathan Scott, is located in Brentwood, Los Angeles, and is known for its notorious maximalist and 'anti-modern' decor.
That's no different with this kitchen, which opts for vintage-looking tiles in a soft blue shade, contrasted against the more modern marble countertops and stainless steel features. It's a look that we're loving; it brings character to an otherwise understated room and nods to traditional kitchen ideas.
Interior designer Charmaine Wynter expands on the design choice, 'Antique-inspired tiles are becoming a captivating design signature, like the granny-chic decor style these vintage-looking tiles bring a touch of nostalgic charm to modern interiors. These tiles emulate the beauty and craftsmanship of eras gone by, with intricate patterns, aged patinas, and period color palettes.'
Whilst larger elements in the kitchen, such as the cabinetry, can be a much bigger design decision, the beauty of wall tiles is that you can have fun with a more daring style, without overpowering the room.
'Consider using them as a focal point in a kitchen backsplash like Zooey Deschanel has or as a creative statement floor in a bathroom or entryway. However you decide to showcase them, antique-inspired tiles effortlessly infuse spaces with a distinctive luxurious lived-in vibe,' Wynter goes on to explain.
