The New Orleans Pelicans have suspended power forward Zion Williamson for Friday night's game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a violation of team policies. This decision comes after Williamson was repeatedly tardy to Pelicans practices and flights throughout the season.
Coach Willie Green stated that there were multiple instances that led to this one-game suspension, emphasizing the importance of team discipline and accountability.
Since being drafted first overall in 2019, Williamson has been plagued by various injuries, causing him to miss more games than he has played. This season, he has only appeared in seven out of 38 games, with the Pelicans holding a 2-5 record in those games.
In a statement, the 24-year-old Williamson took full responsibility for his actions, apologizing to team owner Gayle Benson, his teammates, coaches, and fans. He acknowledged his mistake and expressed his commitment to improving as a teammate and member of the organization.
Despite his recent suspension, Williamson showcased his talent in a recent game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, delivering an impressive performance that included a highlight-reel dunk and solid all-around play.
Following his one-game suspension, Williamson was ruled out for the subsequent game against the Portland Trail Blazers for rest purposes, marking his absence in two consecutive games.
Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin expressed confidence in Williamson's dedication to the team and his willingness to learn from this experience, both on and off the court.
In addition to Williamson's suspension, the Pelicans will also be without forward Herb Jones, who is sidelined indefinitely with a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder. Jones, a key defensive player for the team, underwent an MRI after exiting a recent game against Portland.
Despite these setbacks, the Pelicans are set to face the Boston Celtics on Sunday, aiming to regroup and continue their season with a focus on team unity and performance.
