During a joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed recent assertions made by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding his legitimacy as Ukraine's president. Zelensky firmly stated that his legitimacy is recognized solely by the people of Ukraine, emphasizing that he was elected by the Ukrainian populace. He expressed gratitude for the support received and highlighted the ongoing fight for freedom that the Ukrainian people are engaged in.
Zelensky contrasted his own legitimacy with that of Putin, asserting that Putin's legitimacy is self-proclaimed and recognized only by himself. He criticized the recent Russian presidential election, in which Putin secured a victory by an overwhelming majority, as a predetermined outcome.
The Ukrainian leader also touched upon the imposition of martial law in Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. He noted that the Martial Law Act prohibits elections during wartime, effectively extending his term beyond its original end date in May. Zelensky dismissed Putin's disregard for the martial law and emphasized the importance of upholding democratic processes.
Looking ahead, Zelensky discussed the upcoming Summit on Peace in Ukraine scheduled for June 15-16 in Switzerland. He called on world leaders to participate in person to demonstrate solidarity in ending the conflict. Zelensky emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace, stressing the global community's role in supporting Ukraine towards achieving stability and security.
