Zara launches urgent recall of newborn baby outfit over serious choking risk

Parents are being warned to urgently check their infant's sleepsuits after some sold at Zara are being recalled due to the risk of a baby choking.

The Newborn Ribbed Rompers have snap buttons which trading standards say can easily detach and a child may put in their mouth.

Parents are told to stop dressing their children in the jumpsuits immediately and return them to a Zara store.

The product, which has a ribbed fabric and a cross-over design, has also been pulled from sale and should not be found on shelves in shops.

According to the government's Office for Product Safety and Standards "the snap buttons may easily detach from the jumpsuit. A child may put them in their mouth and choke".

The recall alert adds: "The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005."

The sleepsuit comes in four sizes - newborn to three months, three to six months, six to nine months and nine months to a year.

A message about the recall has also been published on the retalier's website.

It reads: "At Zara we aim to guarantee maximum quality in our products, and we are committed to being transparent about any items that might have had to be withdrawn from sale for any reason.

"Zara Home's objective is to guarantee the maximum quality and safety of all our items. Therefore, we are committed to making consumers aware of those that have had to be recalled from sale for some reason.

"We therefore inform you that the kids newborn romper with reference 4673/529/737 has been withdrawn from sale after detecting some items with some snap buttons that do not hold properly to the garment.

"If you have purchased this item, in order to ensure the best quality service and as a preventive measure, we ask you to please contact us so we can manage a return and refund for the garment. Thank you for trusting in us."
