Zander Clark's transfer state of play with Stoke City still favourites for former St Johnstone goalkeeper

Zander Clark's transfer state of play with Stoke City still favourites for former St Johnstone goalkeeper

STOKE CITY are still the favourites to sign Scotland international goalkeeper Zander Clark.

The former St Johnstone shot stopper departed McDiarmid Park upon the expiry of his contract this summer and has been on the lookout for a club since.

Stoke manager Michael O’Neill has made enquiries about Clark, but Herald and Times Sport understand that the Irishman will need to get rid of one of his current goalkeepers before welcoming Clark into his squad.

The Championship club currently have four keepers on their books in the shape of Josef Bursik, Jack Bonham, Frank Fielding and Blondy Nna Noukeu.

Clark also had interest from Dundee United, but he turned the Tannadice club down before Jack Ross moved for Australian stopper Mark Birighitti.

Clark left St Johnstone this summer after spending a decade in Perth and his important saves over the course of the season helped the club remain in the Scottish top flight.

His departure means that Callum Davidson is on the hunt for a new first-choice goalkeeper with backup Elliot Parish currently starting as No1.

Saints would ideally like to bring a starter into their ranks to allow the upcoming Ross Sinclair to go out on loan.

Kilmarnock’s Sam Walker and Rangers’ Robby McCrorie have been linked with a move to the Fair City, while options south of the border are also being considered.

“We’ve assessed where the team is. We know there are positions we need to strengthen,” Davidson said this week. “We’re looking to do that as soon as we can.

“We want to get the best goalkeeper in we can. We need to make sure it’s the right fit for the club.”
