Zak Crawley flaunts possibility of England scoring 1,000 runs after record-breaking day

Zak Crawley joked that England's next target is to 'get a thousand' after records tumbled on a mesmerising day of Test cricket against Pakistan.

'Bazball' flourished as astounding England became the first side to reach 500 runs on the first day of a Test on Brendan McCullum's first overseas assignment.

England reached a staggering 506-4 before bad light stopped play after 75 overs, as Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook all capitalised on favourable batting conditions with emphatic hundreds.

It was the first time four batters had all reached a ton on day one of a Test, marking a magical return for England in on their first tour of Pakistan in 17 years.

Crawley's own 86-ball ton in Rawalpindi was the fastest by an England Test opener, and the 24-year-old combined with Duckett to create the platform for absolute carnage on an opening day where McCullum's talented young batters ruthlessly cashed in with blistering boundary assaults.

And after an unprecedented day of dominance at the crease, Crawley stressed that England's main ambition is to entertaining make the Test format unmissable.

“No, I’ve never seen a day like that,” he admitted. “I think it is the record in day one of a Test, so it was unbelievable. Ducky batted fantastically and so did the other two boys.

"It was obviously a good wicket to bat on, but it’s more about entertaining the crowd than winning. Winning is great, but part of our goal is to make people want to watch Test cricket and hopefully that's happening."

He added: “Hopefully we can go again tomorrow, get a big one and get a thousand – I’m joking.”

Yorkshire star Brook perhaps captured England's merciless mentality the most by knocking spinner Saud Shakeel for six fours in a single over. And Pope, who played gloriously for his own century, is delighted with the refreshing mindset in the England camp.

"We really listened to what Baz [McCullum] and (Ben) Stokesy have said," Pope said. "It was an amazing day."

"The best thing is everyone has lived by how the two guys up top want us to play. They want us to entertain people. It is not about milestones. It is about putting on a show and putting the team in a good position. The fact everyone is so happy to buy into that puts us in a really good place."
