When the Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers they got both a star quarterback and also a mentor. Rodgers was acquired by the team to not only win a Super Bowl this year, but to look after Zach Wilson as he continues to develop. Now with Rodgers sidelined with a torn Achilles and away from the team, Wilson will be looked after by another savant of the position.
New York quarterbacks coach Todd Downing has been a key asset to Wilson taking over the offense and he’s known around the franchise as a calm, understanding personality, according to The Athletic. So much so that he has won Rodgers’s approval as well.
With Wilson taking over the offense also came some schematic adjustments made to the playbook to accommodate the young signal-caller as well. According to The Athletic, “about half of the game plan” has been changed to fit the strengths of Wilson and, “Everything stays a bit more simple overall.”
They’ll need to make all the adjustments they can for their Sunday bout against a Cowboys defense that’s coming off a 40–0 win over the Giants in Week 1. Wilson’s strides or shortcomings will be on full display Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
