The sixth day of New York Jets training camp is in the books. After about a week of workouts including the first full practice with pads, quarterback Zach Wilson says he’s feeling good.
On Tuesday, Wilson spoke via video conference after a positive day of workouts which ended with a lull. The Wilson-led first-team offense worked an end of practice 11-on-11 team drill all the way to five-yard line.
It ended with a sack.
Still, the offense was pretty good in the sequence and during the workout in general according to head coach Robert Saleh.
“I thought they did a really nice job. A lot of call up periods, too. Nothing scripted. I thought they did a really good job, we had a lot of ‘backed up’ situations where they were able to get out of which is really big for the offense,” Saleh said via video conference. “Overall, I thought it was a really good day for (Wilson).”
In his own words, Wilson said he’s feeling improved as compared to the same time last year as a rookie.
“Yeah, I feel like every day I’ve learned a bunch. I think we’re getting better as a unit, I’m excited about it,” Wilson said.”My understanding of what’s going on is further ahead.”
Even on the final play, the QB found positives.
“We had a long drive there at the end, that was pretty good for us,” Wilson said. “That happens in a game, guys are tired, guys have to focus. I thought that was a good drill for us.”
From a coach’s perspective, there were things for Saleh to hang his hat on as well. The coach said he felt good about the offense getting to that point.
Plus, it’s his defense after all. Jabari Zuniga ended up getting into Wilson’s face first for the would-be sack and Saleh was happy to see that, too.
“You know what, sometimes you just get beat. Zuniga showed up right when he was about to let it rip. That’s real football. That just happens,” Saleh said.
A classic “iron sharpens iron” moment for the Jets.
