Zach Galligan hints at a potential live-action Gremlins 3 film

Gremlins 3

In exciting news for fans of the iconic '80s film franchise, actor Zach Galligan has offered a promising update on the development of a long-awaited third Gremlins movie. Galligan, who played the protagonist Billy Peltzer in both Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, recently spoke with Screen Rant and revealed that Warner Bros. may be planning to bring back the beloved creatures for another 'live-action' adventure.

Galligan expressed his optimism, saying, 'I can’t really figure out why Warner Bros. would do 2 seasons - not one, but two seasons - of the animated series, and spend a lot of money on it unless there was some kind of endgame. And usually the endgame for a huge studio like Warner Bros. Discovery is a live-action film. A live-action film is always where you’re going to make the most money.' He also mentioned that a live-action film is likely because Chris Columbus, the writer of the original Gremlins, has rejected the idea of a reboot and owns part of the rights.

Rumors and speculations about another Gremlins movie have been circulating since 2013, initially focused on a reboot. However, the emergence and success of legacy sequels have sparked enthusiasm among both fans and the creative team for a continuation of the beloved franchise.

Further confirming the interest in a Gremlins 3, Chris Columbus, who wrote the script for the original film, expressed his eagerness to make it happen but mentioned some rights issues that need to be resolved first.

'I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We're working out some rights issues right now, so we're just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way - I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having -- you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don't think I'd use much CGI in Gremlins 3,' Columbus said.

While fans eagerly await the arrival of Gremlins 3, they can indulge themselves in the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Released last year, this animated series takes viewers back to 1920s Shanghai, where the Wing family first encounters the young Mogwai named Gizmo. In the show, Sam Wing, the future shop owner Mr. Wing from the 1984 film, embarks on a dangerous journey alongside Gizmo, a teenage street thief named Elle, and together they encounter mysterious monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, written and executive produced by Tze Chun, features an all-star team of executive producers, including Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sam Register, and Brendan Hay. Additionally, the original Gremlins director Joe Dante is involved as a consulting producer. The first season of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is now available to stream on Max.

With the huge success of recent legacy sequels and the ongoing popularity of the Gremlins franchise, it's no wonder that fans and the talent behind the films are excited about the possibility of a third installment. As we eagerly await more news on Gremlins 3, we can enjoy the animated series and appreciate the enduring charm of those mischievous creatures we all know and love.
