Zac Taylor says Joe Burrow’s health is the top priority

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor had a media interview before his team started practice this week and naturally, Joe Burrow’s injury status was the biggest talking point of the conversation.

Appearing on the “Rich Eisen Show” this week, Taylor provided a minor update on how the week has gone so far for his injured quarterback.

“It has been an encouraging early part of the week,” Taylor said. “We will just take it day-to-day with him, he has been a little sore a little earlier in the week, but we will see how it goes. Fortunate to get an extra day here.”

It meshes with a report the same day highlighting that Burrow has been feeling much better after a few days of rest.

But perhaps the biggest takeaway was Taylor’s response when asked if there is a conversation about shutting down Burrow until after the bye week: “I think the number one thing is Joe’s health and making sure he’s healthy in the short-term and the long-term, so that’s the focus point of any decision we’ll make going forward.”

It’s not an unexpected answer, yet it’s encouraging to see the team won’t commit to throwing Burrow out there to save a season, as both the current record and years down the line remain important.

As we’ve highlighted, the pros and cons of shutting Burrow down until after the bye week is a complicated issue. Fans will find out more Thursday as the team begins practice for next Monday’s game and offers injury reports.
