Zac Efron has revealed that he “almost died” after shattering his jaw and smashing his chin in an accident at home last year.
The 34-year-old detailed the near-fatal incident as he addressed speculation that he had undergone plastic surgery while walking the red carpet at Toronto International Film Festival.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he said of the plastic-surgery rumours: “My mom told me. I never really read the internet, so, I don’t really care.
“It was funny. It sucks. I almost died, but we’re good.”
In 2021, Efron was the centre of plastic-surgery rumours. Recently, the Greatest Beer Run Ever actor recounted the harrowing accident and explained that he slipped on a pair of socks in his house, causing him to smash his chin on a granite fountain.
The star told Men’s Health magazine that he lost consciousness, only to wake up with “his chin bone hanging off his face”.
Efron said that when he was injured, the masseter muscles on the inside of his face and jaw then “compensated” for his injury, causing them to grow in size, and completely transformed his face.
The Bad Neighbours star said it was why he looked so different at the time, adding: “The masseters just grew. They just got really, really big.”
The actor also claimed to not know that he gone viral for his different-looking jaw, until his mother called to ask if he had gone under the knife.
In April 2021, Efron started trending on Twitter for displaying a more prominent square chin and jawline in a video for Earth Day! The Musical.
In the clip, the film star eagerly calls Bill Nye a “genius” after hearing that he and Justin Bieber were working on a fictional Earth Day musical. His appearance led fans to speculate that he had undergone plastic surgery for vanity reasons.
