Zac Efron fuels rumours he's returning to High School Musical - weeks after Vanessa Hudgens

Zac Efron has teased that he is making a return to the High School Musical franchise by posing outside a major location from the series.

The 34-year-old American actor shot to fame back in 2006 when he first starred as the character Troy Bolton in the first made-for-TV films in the franchise.

He went on to reprise the role in 2007 in the first sequel to the film, and then again in the third instalment in 2008 – the first to be on the big screen.

While he has since distanced himself from the High School Musical franchise, a new Instagram post has signalled that he had made a full return to the character that made him world famous.

Taking to Instagram, Zac shared a photo of himself posing outside a building with his hand held in the sky, and added a caption: "Don’t you… Forget about me" alongside a fist emoji.

While the caption is a reference to the iconic 1980s film The Breakfast Club, there was no mistaking the fact that the backdrop to his photo was that of the East High school building.

A banner was present above the entrance to ‘Salt Lake High School East’ that proudly states: “East High 100 years of tradition!”

The banner also included words associated with the school ethos: “Spirit, leadership, unity, academics, pride, service, friendship, athletics.”

While there is no fourth instalment in the High School Musical film series currently in production, a spin-off TV show has been airing on Disney+ since 2019.

The show, titled High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, has seen some original stars return but in new roles.

Kaycee Stroh who played Martha Cox in the original film, and Lucas Grabeel who Ryan Evans in the original film, have popped up so far.

Zac’s appearance outside the set has sparked hopes he will appear in the series in the upcoming third season.

His appearance comes less than month after fellow lead co-star of the original films, Vanessa Hudgens, who played Gabriella Montez, posed outside the same school set.

V Hudge shared a video of herself beaming with a smile outside the school alongside a cryptic message.

She wrote: “Do you remember in kindergarten how you'd meet a kid and know nothing about them, then 10 seconds later you're playing like you're best friends because you didn't have to be anything but yourself?”

One fan, commenting on Zac’s Instagram post, drew a connection between the two events, writing: “But but but... Vanessa posted a similar one a few weeks ago. What does this mean?”

While another remarked: “I hope this means you and Vanessa are guest starring on HSMTMTS.”
