With Christmas just around the corner, the shops are full of festive treats galore as households are in the midst of planning their yuletide meals.
Yule logs are one of the most popular desserts to tuck into after Christmas dinner - and of course, just about every supermarket has stocked the shelves with their own take on the cake. The Liverpool Echo team put yule logs from four of the major supermarkets to the test to find which ones were worth buying this festive season - and there were some surprising results.
While the most expensive log came out on top, the cheapest cake on the list also bagged an equally high rating - meaning you don't have to spend more to get the tastiest treats this Christmas. Here's the verdict on yule logs from Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.

Asda
Price: £4.50
Verdict: 2/5
Asda 's Extra Special Luxury Yule Log, fared worst of all the supermarkets when it came to the festive cake, despite its eye-catching appearance with gold-dusted chocolate curls which would be sure to be a show-stopping addition to the Christmas dinner table. But it was the inside of the log that let it down, according to the Echo team.
The frosting on the exterior was relatively tasty, though incredibly sweet, and the chocolate curls were pretty but a little bland but it was the sponge that really did the damage," was their verdict. "It looks incredible but the flavour lets it down entirely. I wouldn't recommend this at all."
Sainsbury's
Price: £4.50
Verdict: 4/5
Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Milk Chocolate Yule Log impressed the reviewers, not only with its luxurious appearance but its rich chocolate buttercream too. This cake only dropped one point due to its incredibly sweet taste, which could prove sickly if you cut yourself a big slice.
"The sponge is soft and moist, but it's the chocolate buttercream that really sets it apart," the taste-testers said. "It's so deliciously creamy and light and it contrasts beautifully with the harder milk chocolate on the outer shell. The whole thing is a chocolate lover's dream - just stick to a thin slice, or you'll feel sick."
Tesco
Price: £5
Verdict: 5/5
It might be the priciest yule log on the list, but it seems you get what you pay for with Tesco 's Finest Belgian Chocolate Yule Log. This delicious-looking treat earned a stellar five out of five from the Echo team for its creamy, soft and rich taste.
"It was the mixture of milk chocolate and Belgian chocolate ganache that sealed the deal," they said. "Giving the cake a creamy, soft texture that wasn’t too sweet, it really was the icing on the cake. It would make the perfect post-Christmas dinner dessert."
Morrisons
Price: £2
Verdict: 5/5
Despite being the cheapest yule log on the list, Morrisons ' Chocolate Yule Log also came out on top with its indulgent chocolatey flavour. Serving eight people, the taste testers were impressed by the size too - making it great value for money for those looking to cut back this Christmas without compromising on taste.
"I took a bite and was instantly impressed," the reviewer said. "The sponge is nice and light and was complimented by the addition of the smooth, rich chocolate buttercream.
"Sometimes chocolate cakes can be too rich and heavy, but this one is just right. In my opinion it makes for the ideal Christmas treat and I will definitely be enjoying it again."
